The smallest high school in the state's biggest school district held commencement exercises Friday on the fighting Farmers' football field at Granite High School.

"It's just another good Granite High School class," said Principal Louie Long, who has been at Granite's helm for seven years."The unity of the class this year is what makes it unique," added Long, which is not to say that the group is entirely homogeneous. Indeed, Granite's student body is among the most ethnically diverse in the Salt Lake Valley, a quality reflected in the senior class. Mui Tran is the salutatorian, Chi Hwang is one of four seniors who will speak at commencement exercises and senior Neil Amin received national or state recognition for his achievements in business-class projects.

Dave Nichol, a career counselor at the school, said that the school in recent years has been worried about the possibility of declining student numbers because of shifting demographic patterns but that Granite's number of graduates this year suggests its population base remains stable.

Nichol noted too that the school's varsity football team this school year - thanks in large part to the senior class - posted one of its best records in recent memory.
