A mixed-race woman won the Miss South Africa contest Saturday, a title previously won only by whites since the beauty competition began in 1954.

Amy Kleinhans, a mixed-race woman from Cape Town, won the title. Augustine Masilela, a black woman from Johannesburg's Soweto township, came second in the contest broadcast live on television.South Africa last year returned to the Miss World contest after 14 years of anti-apartheid isolation. Its representative, white model Diana Tilden-Davis, was second in the world contest.
