Whatever happened to Wanda Hendrix, Audie Murphy's first wife? I haven't heard of her in years. - J.P., Tajunga, Calif.

STATS: Born Nov. 3, 1928, in Jacksonville, Fla., as Dixie Wanda Hendrix. She attended Jacksonville public schools. Married three times, the first time to Audie Murphy.IN EARLY YEARS: Hendrix insisted she decided she would be a movie star when she was 4. At 14, after a stage appearance, she was signed by Warner Bros., which groomed her for stardom. She appeared in two outstanding movies, "Confidential" in 1945 and "Ride the Pink Horse" in 1947. Amid much publicity, Hendrix and war hero Muprhy courted and married in 1949. By 1950, when they were divorced, Murphy had gambled away her money.

FAMOUS FOR: She was the sweet leading lady or damsel in distress in films of the 1950s, "Miss Tatlock's Millions," "Captain Carey, U.S.A." and "Prince of Foxes."

IN RECENT YEARS: Her career faded in the late 1950s and she retired at the request of her second husband, wealthy Jim Stack, actor Robert's brother. She hoped to resume her career after their divorce. It never happened. After a long illness, she died in 1981.
