For fans of "alternative rock," the third time is definitely the charm - Lollapalooza '93, the annual "modern rock" version of Woodstock, is finally coming.

The brainstorm of former Janes Addiction singer Perry Farrell (now of Porno For Pyros), Lollapalooza has become one of the biggest concert success stories, as the first two editions played to more than 1 million fans and grossed nearly $30 million. But those first two 'Paloozas, which featured acts as divergent as Red Hot Chili Peppers, Pearl Jam, Janes Addiction, Living Colour and Ice-T, also skipped the Beehive State. However, Utah audiences will get their full-day dose Friday, June 25, at the Weber County Fairgrounds.

The past two Lollapaloozas "helped prove that concertgoers would come for the whole day to witness all kinds of great music and all sorts of fantastic art, not just to fan worship the artistry of one particular band," said Ted Gardner, Farrell's manager, who is a co-organizer of the tour.

Consequently, organizers had a choice: become more populist or more challenging. " chose the latter," Gardner said. They also added one more band.

The eight bands in the early Lollapalooza '93 lineup are, in order of appearance:

- Rage Against the Machine, an L.A. area rap-hardcore-funk-metal quartet.

- Babes in Toyland, a Minneapolis, Minn., female punk-rock trio.

- Front 242, a European four-piece "industrial" unit.

- Arrested Development, acclaimed hip-hop rappers.

- Fishbone, the multistyled hardcore, metal, funk, ska act.

- Dinosaur Jr., from Boston, Mass., featuring alternative rock "guitar god" Jake Mascis.

- Alice in Chains, a metal quartet that reinvented itself in the Seattle "grunge" style.

- Primus, the Bay Area goof-funk-punk trio.

In addition to the headliners, a second "small stage" will feature other acts in between the headliners, including Tool, Mercury Rev, Mutabaruka and Bash & Pop.

The all-day music festival will also feature the Village, "a place where art, music and politics collide," according to Gardner. A food court area will offer exotic food booths.

Gates open at 10 a.m., with music starting at noon. Tickets are $27.50 in advance (with a surcharge) from all Smith'sTix locations. The show is a United Concerts production.
