Joseph Vern Dunn died Wednesday, June 23, 1993 in a one-car rollover in Jean, Nevada.
Vern was born June 2, 1928 in Provo, Utah to Joseph Vern and Mary Leora Christensen Dunn. He was raised in Provo, Utah and graduated from Provo High in 1946, where he served as senior class president and was an all-star center in football. He joined the Marines after high school and then entered Brigham Young University on a football scholarship. After working for the geological survey in Alaska, he met and married Mary Tregeagle Dunn in 1954; their marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake LDS Temple in 1962. Vern learned to fly in the Marines and owned his own plane until moving to St. George in 1985. Vern had three dreams he wanted to fulfill in his lifetime. He more than accomplished all of them, and then some. He wanted to break a horse, he wanted to fly, and he wanted to raise a fine family.
Vern's accomplishments were many and varied. He started his own construction company in Provo in 1956. He was the first president of Utah Valley Excavators Association. He was listed in "Who's Who in Finance and Industry," and was honored and respected by his peers in the construction field.
His church service included LDS bishop's counselor, bishop, High Councilman, stake president of Sharon Stake, where he served until 1983. His greatest accomplishments, however, were to his family of whom he served as a father and patriarch with unconditional love.
He was a big man with a spirit to match his body. He died everything in a big way and his life speaks for itself.
He is survived by his wife, Mary, of St. George; four sons and one daughter, Michael and Kathy Dunn, of Timber Lakes, Utah; Patrick and Jill Dunn of West Jordan; Skip and Michelle Dunn, of Orem; Kristy and Scott Nielson, of Orem; Alan and Robyn Dunn, of St. George; 14 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild; a brother, James L. Dunn, of Las Vegas, Nev.; and a siter, LaPrele Carstens of Grand Junction, Colo.
