A capsule look at Sunday's competition at the Goodwill Games:

Track and field: Lance Deal became the first American hammer thrower to win a major international competition since Harold Connolly at the 1956 Olympics amd the first American to surpass 262 feet, 5 inches overseas, winning at 263-1. Britain's Sally Gunnell, the 1992 Olympic champion and 1993 world champion, won the women's 400-meter hurdles in 53.51 seconds, the fastest in the world this year. Quincy Watts, the 1992 Olympic gold medalist at 400 meters, won for the first time this year, in 45.21, edging Britain's Duane Ladejo, who had the same time. Gwen Torrence took the women's 100 at 10.95, beating Russia's Irina Privalova (10.98).Beach volleyball: Both American men's teams won one of two matches and the American women won three. For the men, Sinjin Smith of Pacific Palisades, Calif., and Bruk Vandeweghe of Beverly Hills, Calif., topped Russia 15-8 and lost to France by the same score. The team of Jeff Williams of Santa Monica, Calif., and Carlos Briceno of Fountain Valley, Calif., lost to Norway 15-12 and beat Japan 15-10. For the women, Barbra Fontana of Laguna Beach, Calif., and Lori Forsythe, Encinitas, Calif., won twice, beating Brazil 15-4 and Japan 15-6. Karolyn Kirby and Liz Masakayan of San Diego defeated Australia 15-13.

Swimming: Alexander Popov won the 50 and 100-meter freestyle, topping world-record holder Tom Jager in the 50 in a slow time of 22.55. Popov, American Angel Martino and China's Ren Xing won two gold medals apiece. The Chinese women won five of 10 women's events, another sign of China's emerging swim power. The five-member Swedish team declined to swim because of the pool's murky water.

Basketball: Russia upset the United States in men's basketball 77-75. Sergei Bazarevich led the Russians with 23 points. Sergei Babkov, who did not play in Saturday night's 95-93 victory over China, scored 18. Shawn Respert of Michigan State topped the Americans with 17. In the day's other games, Puerto Rico defeated Brazil 109-98; Italy topped Croatia 79-77; Argentina beat China 74-49.

Boxing: The United States won only one of four matches. At 132 pounds, Larry Nicholson of Tyler, Texas, topped Arthur Santana of the Netherlands, 17-4. Teammate Terrance Cauthen of Philadelphia lost in the same weight class, 7-6, to Bruno Wartelle of France. At 157 pounds, Jesse Aquino of Kansas City lost 10-1 to Dirk Dzemski. Darrell Dixon of Tacoma, Wash., at 201 pounds, lost a 11-3 decision to Germany's Peer Mueller.

Team handball: Russia defeated the United States 33-18 in one of the day's two matches.

Judo: American Colleen McDonald lost to Hiroko Kitazume of Japan in the quarterfinals of the 134-pound class.
