Beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and friend, Florence Holmes Nielsen, 82, died Wednesday, June 29, 1994 at her home of heart disease.
Born June 17, 1912 to George Arthur and Amelia Iverson Holmes. Graduated from Murray High School and attended Henager's Business College. Married O. Wayne Nielsen August 3, 1931 in Salt Lake City; later solemnized in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. She and her beloved husband enjoyed 57 happy years of marriage before he passed away in 1989.She is survived by three daughters and their husbands, Ann and Carl Erickson, Sandy; Jean and Dale Duke, Salt Lake City; Sally and Brent Black, Salt Lake City; 10 grandchildren: Ericksons-Neil (Michelle), Kae, and David (Amy); Dukes-Marsha (John) Wallin, Steven (Veloy), Alison (John) Service, and Jim; Blacks-Kenneth (Julie), Michelle (Richard) Beard, and Julie (David) Petersen; eight great-grandchildren: Lauren Peterson, Ryan Erickson, Jessica and Zachary Wallin, Megan and Skyler Duke, Sarah, and Katie Black; one sister, Virginia Holmes McHenry, Salt Lake City; one sister-in-law, Louise Darnell, San Antonio, Texas; and one brother-in-law, Ted Wheat, Salt Lake City; as well as several much-loved nieces and nephews.
Preceded in death by her husband, parents, and one sister.
Florence was a lifelong resident of Murray. In high school, she was a fine student and won many local, state and national honors for her typing speed and accuracy. She met her sweetheart and husband while she was a student at Murray and he was a new teacher. For many years she worked in the banking business in Murray and Midvale, where she made and kept many dedicated friends. She was a wonderful homemaker, cook, neighbor and friend. She gave generously of her time and talents to all.
Florence often said, "I live in the best neighborhood in the world."
Florence was active in the community. She was a member of the Murray Civic Guild, Murray Women's Club, and the Lady Lions for many years. Florence was an active member of the LDS Church and at the time of her death, resided in the Murray Park Ward. She held many positions in her ward and was in charge of flowers and gifts for ward funerals for over 18 years.
Florence and Wayne were active supporters of Murray High School and Brigham Young University athletics. They were honored by Murray High School with the "Super Booster Award" for 1977-78. Again last year at homecoming festivities, Florence was cited by Murray High School as their honored alumnus-a highlight of her life.
Above all, she supported, honored and loved her family. Her pride in and her commitment to her husband, their daughters, sons-in-law, grandchildren and great-grandchildren were remarkable. She set an unusual example, was greatly loved and will be sorely missed.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, July 7 at 2 p.m. in the Murray Park Ward Chapel, 495 East 5600 South. Friends may call Wednesday, 6-8 p.m. at Jenkins Soffe Mortuary, 4760 South State, and Thursday, 12:45-1:45 p.m. at the church prior to the service. Interment, Murray City Cemetery.
The family expresses special thanks for the loving help, support and care given by the doctor, nurse and aides during Florence's last illness.
