Norman R. Slaymaker, 62, died peacefully February 20, 1995, from lymphoma.
He was born February 2, 1933 in Salt Lake City to Alfred and Ella Hansen Slaymaker, and was raised by his mother. He attended South High School, BYU, and graduated from the University of Utah. He was active in High School and College Athletics. He married Barbara Nicholson in 1955.Norm began his business career as a life insurance agent in Salt Lake City. In the early 70's he developed Sizzler Restaurants in Alaska and Wyoming. The Slaymaker Restaurant Group has gone on to open Chi-Chi's Mexican Restaurants, Tony Roma's, TGI Friday's, and Winger's Restaurants in Utah, Idaho, Alaska and Arizona. Norm was a former pilot in the Air Force and the Utah Air National Guard.
Norm served on the Board of Governors for the Salt Lake Area Chamber of Commerce. He also served on the boards of the Utah Air Travel Commission, The Utah Arthritis Foundation, the Salt Lake Convention and Visitors Bureau, and had just been named to the Utah Symphony Board before he became ill. He was a member of the Salt Lake Rotary Club.
Norm is survived by his wife, Barbara; children, Scott R. and Shauna Slaymaker, of Salt Lake; Eric E. and Karen Slaymaker, of Salt Lake; Stefano and Suzanne Bronzati, of Orlando, Florida; and seven grandchildren; sisters, Mrs. Norm (MarJean) Rackley, of Salt Lake; Mrs. Jack (Carolyn) Sobocinski, of Basking Ridge, New Jersey; brother, Ronald Slaymaker, of Anchorage, Alaska; and stepbrother, Harvey B. Russell, of Salt Lake.
At the wishes of the deceased there will be no viewing. Funeral services will be held at 12 noon, Saturday, February 25, 1995 in the Mt. Olympus 2nd Ward Chapel, 3862 East Oakview Drive (4275 South) where friends may call from 10:45 - 11:45 a.m. prior to services or at the family home on Friday, February 24, 1995 from 6:00-8:30 p.m. For the address please call the Slaymaker Company Office.
