Members of the Salt Lake County Republican Central Committee passed a resolution Saturday to derail light rail.
The resolution, the same one the state Republican Party passed last week, says that rather than fund a light rail running from Sandy to Salt Lake City, the state should spend its transportation money on improving I-15.The movement against light rail developed almost overnight after Rep. Jim Hansen and Rep. Enid Waldholtz expressed fears two weeks ago that the federal government may not fulfill its promise to pay the bulk of the $300 million tab for the 15-mile corridor.
After the state committee's resolution passed last week, several prominent Republicans defended light rail. The governor and both U.S. Senators support light rail.
