Leonard Wallenstein Jarcho died August 28, 1996 in Salt Lake City.

Dr. Jarcho was born August 12, 1916 in New York City. He received a bachelor's degree in Latin and English from Harvard College, a master's degree in Latin from Columbia University, and the degree of Doctor of Medicine from the College of Physicians and Surgeons at Columbia. Sinai Hospital in New York, and a fellowship at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, where he later became an instructor. He obtained additional training in neurology at the National Hospital, Queen Square, London and at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. During World War II, he served in the Army Medical Corps on Guadalcanal and in Manila, attaining the rank of major. In 1952, Dr. Jarcho joined the faculty of the University of Utah School of Medicine. In 1959, he became the first chief of the newly formed Division of Neurology. When this division became a separate department in 1965, he was its founding chairman. He was made Emeritus Professor of Neurology in 1986.

By his own estimation, Dr. Jarcho's most important professional contributions were his many years of teaching countless medical students, interns, residents and fellows, and his dedication to the care of his patients. He also was an avid skier, outdoorsman, birdwatcher and amateur naturalist. He was deeply devoted to his wife and children.

He is survived by his wife, Ann; two sons, John and Daniel; one granddaughter, Caroline; his brother, Saul; and his sister, Grace Ross. His third son, William, preceded him in death.
