Heeere's a promise kept: Johnny Carson helped his grade school penmanship teacher celebrate her 100th birthday.
The retired host of NBC's "The Tonight Show" returned to his hometown of Norfolk, Neb., Monday to attend a dinner honoring Faye Gordon. For years, Carson told Gordon he would visit her on her 100th birthday. He stayed true to his word, though Carson's arrival was a surprise for Gordon.
The event at Gordon's nursing home included a serenade, an old-fashioned farm dinner of pan-fried chicken and talk of the woman's long life.
Carson praised Gordon for the contribution she made to his life and the lives of her other students. He gave her a music box that plays "Unforgettable."
"Johnny coming for my birthday was a real gift," Gordon said.
