What is the top radio station for those age 12-17 in Utah?
It's often overlooked by the media and many advertisers, but it might be interesting for parents to know what station their teens may be listening to and for teens to know if their listening choices are among the most popular.KZHT (FM-94.9) is ranked No. 1 for teens, according to the latest Arbitron ratings (winter 1997, Monday to Sunday, 6 a.m. to midnight).
The hit radio/dance station commands a 16.5 percent share of the teen audience, ahead of No. 2 album rock station KBER (FM-101.1) with a 12.2 percent share. Third is modern music KXRK (alias "X-96.3") at 10.1 percent, and KBEE (FM-98.7) and KISN-FM - both adult hit music stations - are tied for fourth at 7.4 percent each.
KKAT, KSFI, KENZ, KODJ and KUBL round out the top 10.
It is interesting to note, too, that the top stations for teens differ among males and females. KBER is the top male teen choice while KZHT is No. 1 for girls. KISN-FM is No. 2 for girls and KXRK is runner-up for boys.
What's the least-listened-to stations among teenagers? Well, some stations like KTKK are unmeasurable, but KBZN, KALL and KBKK are all in the bottom three among teenagers.
- KTKK (alias "K-Talk," AM-630) will air a special program on Saturday, May 31, 7-10 p.m. at the Skyline High School auditorium, 3251 E. 3760 South, geared for veterans of the gulf war and other interested persons.
The station will have Joyce Riley, a nurse, talk about "her side and the government side"' of gulf war syndrome.

- KISN (FM-97.1) - The station staged a 31-hour "Cares for Kids Care-A-Thon" last weekend and took over $100,000 in pledges from listeners for this nonprofit children's fund.
Homeless kids, the Traveler's Aid Society, Shriner's Hospital and other charities will benefit from the money raised.
The morning DJ team "Fisher, Todd and Erin" anchored the fund-raising efforts.
- TEN YEARS AGO - KCGL returns modern music to Salt Lake City on weekends by purchasing time on KRPN . . . KTOU becomes Utah's newest radio station with jazz and new age music on FM-94.9. Brad Stone and Barry Moll program the new station, formerly KBNG.
- RADIO HAPPENINGS - Tom Barberi on KALL talked about Utah's high taxes Tuesday. He also discussed the assumption that you're likely a Mormon if you tell others you're from Utah . . . Richard Cano of the "Bull Crew" on KUBL did another "Swami" bit Tuesday. The DJ also had comedian Earl Reed as a guest on the show and gave away Utah Jazz playoff tickets . . .
KSOP had another dance event at the Westerner Club this week, giving away tickets at Country Joe's western store . . . "Uncle Nasty" on KBER has offered some extensive Utah Jazz reports. The DJ also had an interview Tuesday with a sex doctor . . . The "Space Elders" on KXRK Tuesday with "Kerry, Bill and Gina" was a repeat of the "Tribbles" episode. On Wednesday the DJs aired a "Mr. Mannly," who talked about secret communications. The station also continued its $96 "Cash Bride" contest this week . . .
Jimmy Chunga on KENZ did another Timeline Quiz Tuesday. On Wednesday Chunga and Marcus talked about Martha Stewart . . . "Kidd Cassidy" on KKAT started a new contest this week, "Super-truck Keys." On Wednesday the DJ got a weather prediction from a woman with arthritis to compare her accuracy to that of Dan Pope of Ch. 4. Traffic news on the station is now being provided by "Cadillac Clyde (Lewis)" . . . The newest slogan for KUMT is "soft rock for a busy world" . . .
KFNZ, alias "KFAN," did its noontime broadcast Tuesday in front of the new Deseret News building . . . "Fisher, Todd and Erin" on KISN-FM asked listeners Wednesday for comments about their traffic reporting. The DJs also listened to embarrassing tales from listeners . . .
"Mick and Allen" on KURR asked listeners Wednesday to call them about breast implants . . . Jon Carter on KRSP Wednesday did a "Booner and Hot Rod" spoof on the sportscasters being burned out by the long Utah Jazz season . . . "The Wakeup Club" on KBEE aired a new homemade song by Robert Lund about Karl Malone as the MVP . . .
"Dickie Shannon and the Morning Maniacs" on KODJ gave away passes to Cherry Hill resort this week . . . "The Morning House Party" team on KZHT encouraged listeners to break open their piggy banks Wednesday. Then, the DJs would help count the money.
