Archbishop Desmond Tutu of South Africa and former pro athlete Bo Jackson were both honored by Auburn University for their contributions to improving the lives of others.

Auburn presented International Quality of Life Awards to Tutu and Jackson in a ceremony at the United Nations in New York. "Archbishop Tutu and Bo Jackson exemplify individuals who have struggled, each in his own way, to ensure a better quality of life for future generations," said June Henton, dean of Auburn's School of Human Resources.

Tutu's fight against apartheid earned him the Nobel Peace Prize in 1984.
