CHICAGO (AP) -- A former death row inmate who was freed through the efforts of a college journalism class has been jailed on charges of domestic battery.

Anthony Porter, who spent nearly 17 years on death row, struck his daughter and her mother at a party on Monday night, authorities said.One of the women was struck in the face and the other was hit several times and kicked, authorities said. Porter allegedly fled the scene before police arrived.

Porter turned himself in Tuesday. Judge Gregory O'Brien set bond at $20,000 on each of the two domestic battery charges. Porter was held in the Cook County Jail in lieu of bond. O'Brien set a court date of April 1 for Porter.
