Jon Godfread, a 6-foot-11, 245-pound senior at Red River High School in Grand Forks, N.D., has given University of Utah basketball coach Rick Majerus a verbal commitment to play for the Utes beginning in 2000-2001.
"A chance to play in the NCAA tournament is every basketball player's dream," Godfread told the Grand Forks Herald. "It's a dream of mine. Utah is always in the NCAA tournament. Utah is where I think I'll fit in the best. They showed that they really wanted me. Coach Majerus is a really good coach, and he made me feel the most comfortable."Godfread has been a two-year starter at Red River. He averaged 9.6 points and 5.4 rebounds per game as a sophomore and 12.2 points and 8.0 rebounds last year when he was a selection on the all-Eastern Dakota Conference team.
Godfread was recruited by approximately 30 NCAA Division I programs. His final choice came down to Utah, Iowa, Northwestern and North Carolina State. He plans to officially sign a letter of intent during the NCAA basketball early signing period, which runs from Nov. 10-17.
