WASHINGTON — Dorothy Auerbach, wife of legendary Boston Celtics coach Red Auerbach, died Saturday following a lengthy illness. She was 78.

Dorothy Auerbach wrote children's books and poetry and remained mostly in Washington during NBA seasons, traveling to Boston to help celebrate the many Celtics championships.

Red Auerbach took over as general manager and coach in 1950s and remains closely associated with the team, currently as vice chairman of the board.
