ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) — A woman fatally shot the former head of Alaska's state police, wounded his wife and then turned the gun on herself Saturday, authorities said.

The armed woman ambushed retired Alaska Commissioner of Public Safety Glenn Godfrey and his wife, Patricia, as they arrived at their home in suburban Eagle River about 12:30 a.m., police said.

The woman hit the 53-year-old man first, striking him twice in the stomach and once in the head, then shot his 52-year-old wife as she fled up a flight of stairs, police said.

Patricia Godfrey suffered wounds in the arm, leg and stomach and was undergoing surgery Saturday morning at Alaska Regional Hospital in Anchorage.

Police said the assailant, who was not immediately identified, then fatally shot herself with the 44-caliber Magnum pistol.

Patricia Godfrey managed to call 911 from a bedroom phone. Arriving police found Glenn Godfrey on the first floor and a handgun lying near the assailant's body.

Police did not immediately have a motive for the shootings.
