COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Utah quarterback Alex Smith, San Diego State linebackers Heath Farwell and Kirk Morrison and San Diego kicker Garrett Palmer were named Mountain West Conference players of the week.
Smith completed 17 of 27 passes for 244 yards and three touchdowns Saturday in Utah's 45-28 win at Wyoming. He also ran for a season-high 90 yards on 14 carries and one TD as Utah clinched its second straight conference championship.
Smith has won the MWC offensive player award the last three weeks. He has been honored six times this season and nine times during his career.
Farwell and Morrison shared the defensive player award after recording a career-high 19 tackles apiece in San Diego State's 37-31 win at Air Force Saturday.
Farwell had one interception and forced two fumbles, including one midway through the second quarter when Air Force was on San Diego State's 5. Morrison jumped on the ball in the end zone to end the Air Force scoring threat.
Morrison also had a game-saving interception on his goal line with 13 seconds left. An Air Force touchdown would have tied the score at 37, with the Falcons' extra-point attempt yet to come.
Palmer won special teams recognition after making all his field-goal attempts in the San Diego State victory. He connected from 26, 37 and 29 yards.
