Five new temple presidents and matrons have been announced by the First Presidency.
Robert L. Backman, 83, of the Olympus 1st Ward, Salt Lake Olympus Stake, called as president of the Jordan River Utah Temple, succeeding President Ben B. Banks. His wife, Janet Woodbury Backman, will serve as temple matron.
President Backman, a temple sealer, is a former member of the Presidency of the Seventy and was called to the First Quorum of the Seventy in 1978. He is a former regional representative, counselor in YMMIA general superintendency, mission president and stake president's counselor. He is a retired attorney and World War II Army veteran. He was born in Salt Lake City, Utah, to LeGrand P. and Edith Price Backman. His first wife, Virginia Pickett Backman, is deceased.
Sister Janet Backman, a visiting teaching coordinator, is a former stake Relief Society president's counselor and secretary, ward Relief Society president, ward family history adviser, and ward Young Women president's counselor. She was born in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Harvey Charles and Lucille Coulam Woodbury.
Frank Herbert Hewstone, 68, of Kellyville 2nd Ward, Sydney Australia Greenwich Stake, called as president of the Sydney Australia Temple, succeeding President George Mearns. Elder Hewstone's wife, Maxine Janice Poole Hewstone, will serve as temple matron.
President Hewstone, a temple sealer, is a former stake and ward Young Men president, high councilor, bishop, bishop's counselor, high priests group leader and elders quorum president. He is a retired projects and operations manager for the Church in Australia and Papua New Guinea. He was born in Woodside, South Australia, to Reginald Jack and Muriel Alice House Hewstone.
Sister Hewstone, a Relief Society compassionate service leader, is a former stake Primary president, a stake Relief Society and Young Women president's counselor, ward Primary and Relief Society counselor and president, ward Young Women president, and Primary teacher. She was born in Kapunda, South Australia, to William and Amanda Norma Poole.
Marcus Reijnders, 57, of the Haarlem Ward, The Hague Netherlands Stake, called as president of The Hague Netherlands Temple, succeeding President Anne Hulleman. President Reijnders' wife, Cornelia J. Reijnders-Enzlin, will serve as temple matron. President Reijnders, a temple president's counselor, is a former high councilor, bishop and bishop's counselor, and Young Men president. He is a retired occupational health medical doctor. He was born in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, to Carolus and Cornelia E. M. Reijnders-Spillekom.
Sister Reijnders, an assistant to the temple matron, is a former ward Young Women and Primary president, ward Relief Society president's counselor and ward seminary teacher. She was born in The Hague, The Netherlands, to Cornelis and Cornelia M. van der Laan Enzlin.
Manfred H. Schutze, 64, of the Bernburg Branch, Leipzig Germany Stake, called as president of Freiberg Germany Temple, succeeding President Gerhard Grunewald. President Schuetze's wife, Helga Doerr Schutze, will serve as temple matron. President Schuetze, an Area Seventy and a patriarch, is a former temple sealer, mission president, stake and district president, and a branch president and counselor. He is a teacher and CES area director for Central and Eastern Europe. He was born in Selingersruh, Germany, to Hermann and Marta Else Himpel Schutze.
Sister Schutze, a branch Primary president, is a former stake Relief Society president's counselor, Primary president, Relief Society president and secretary. She was born in Hitzacker, Germany, to Herbert Gustav and Elsbeth Burmeister Doerr.
M. Richard Walker, 68, of the Grandview 1st Ward, Salt Lake Wilford Stake, called as president of the Salt Lake Temple, succeeding President L. Aldin Porter. President Walker's wife, Kathleen Walker, will serve as temple matron.
President Walker, a gospel doctrine teacher, was president of the Indiana Indianapolis Mission, 1998-2001, is a former stake president and counselor, high councilor, bishop and elders quorum president. He is an attorney. He was born in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Milton Wilson and Emma Summerhays Walker.
Sister Walker, a Relief Society teacher, is a former stake and ward Young Women president, and ward Relief Society and Primary president. She was born in Salt Lake City, Utah.
