Thirteen artists on Deseret Book's recording label, Shadow Mountain Records, performed in a two-part concert with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and the Orchestra at Temple Square Tuesday night at the Tabernacle. The concert, "Music for a Summer Evening," was in conjunction with the LDS Booksellers Association's convention, which is taking place in Sandy, Utah, this week.Jana Erickson, a product director for Deseret Book, said the concert was a way "to introduce the booksellers to some of the music on the albums that are coming out."The first half of the program included individual songs performed by the Shadow Mountain Recording artists, all of whom have recently released or will soon release an album.Featured on the first half of the program were singers Kenneth Cope, Mercy River, Jenny Jordan Frogley and Michael McLean.Violinist Jenny Oaks Baker, former first violinist with the National Symphony Orchestra, performed the suite from the 1992 film "Far and Away." The song is featured on her album "Silver Screen Serenade" to be released in September.Elder Russell M. Nelson of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was in attendance with his wife, Wendy. He instigated a standing ovation after Baker's rousing number, and nearly everyone in the full Tabernacle followed suit. The second half of the program featured the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and Orchestra at Temple Square, which together performed songs from albums that have or will be released in the future.Included was the gospel hymn "Down to the River to Pray" and "Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing," which elicited the second, Tabernacle-wide standing ovation of the night. Both of the songs will be featured on the choir's spring 2009 release, "Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing."Also in attendance were Elder Dallin H. Oaks of the Quorum of the Twelve and his wife, Kristen. The LDS Booksellers Association has an entertainment portion every year during its conference. Erickson said this was the largest concert to date and the first one in such a large venue. "This was a great opportunity for the booksellers," she said.
