GUADALAJARA, Mexico — The United States has set another Pan American Games record in the pool.

Elizabeth Pelton won her 100-meter backstroke heat in 1 minute, 1.57 seconds. The previous record of 1:01.71 had been set by another American, Barbara Bedford, at the games in Mar del Plata, Argentina, in 1995.

Also Sunday, Colombian cyclist Maria Luisa Calle won the women's time trial in 28:04.82. Evelyn Yesenia Garcia of El Salvador earned silver and Laura Brown of Canada got bronze.

The Americans dominated the opening day of competition in Guadalajara on Saturday, winning seven of the 11 gold medals and 14 overall. They also broke three championship records, first in the women's 100 butterfly and then twice in the women's 4x100 freestyle relay.
