"THE BROKEN ROAD," by Shannon Guymon, Bonneville Books, $16.99, 265 pages (f)

Shannon Guymon's "The Broken Road" is a fun and quirky love story about forgiveness and second chances, and is one of those rare novels that can be both entertaining and inspiring.

Guymon doesn't gloss over the sometimes harsh conditions of reality, but instead boldly confronts them. Her novel focuses on identity theft and overcoming bad family situations.

"Although some may believe that the events that happen in this novel are implausible, sadly enough they happen every day," Guymon said.

After her own family dealt with identity theft, she was determined to incorporate this particular trial into her next novel. This novel is an accompaniment novel to "Makeover" and "Taking Chances."

While this novel does touch on some harsh conditions, this story remains a charming and entertaining story.

Allison Vaughn desperately wants to protect her siblings, Aspen and Talon, from their manipulative and criminal father, even if it means returning to Alpine, Utah, a place she knows she will be hated.

Setting her fears aside, Allison returns to Alpine determined to do whatever it takes to protect her siblings, but she can't help but wonder if anybody will be able to forget her family's sordid past.

Armed with a few unlikely friends from Guymon's previous novels, Allison is ready to face anything life throws at her. Perhaps, including a chance to renew a relationship with the guy she fell for so long ago.

This novel poignantly touches upon the complicated issues of forgiveness and judgment. The author also explores sibling relationships in a way that will reach out to all who have ever wanted to protect their loved ones from harm.

"In the Mormon culture we have the ideal of the perfect family, but not all of us have that," Guymon said. "It's important to realize that even if you don't have the perfect family, if you live your life right things will work out for you."

Her novel fits the bill nicely. This beautifully written tale of romance and forgiveness is one that readers of all ages will cherish and thoroughly enjoy.
