HYRUM, Cache County — An argument over "property issues" culminated in a man shooting his brother-in-law to death on Tuesday, police said.

Both men involved in the incident were armed, according to the Cache County Sheriff's Office.

Just before 4:30 p.m., deputies were called to a home, 84 N. 600 East in Hyrum, where they found Aaron Smith, 40, of Provo, waiting out front.

"Aaron identified himself as the individual who had fired the gun inside the home and immediately surrendered himself to the first responding deputies," the sheriff's office said in a prepared statement.

Inside, investigators found the body of Robert J. Van Hemert, 37, of Hyrum, on the floor. Van Hemert rents the property, according to police.

The two men were arguing inside the house over "property issues." During the argument, Van Hemert pulled out a handgun and Smith allegedly responded by pulling out a gun of his own.

"Shots were fired that impacted Mr. Van Hemert, resulting in his death," the statement said.

Smith was questioned by police. As of Wednesday there had been no arrests and the investigation was continuing.

Van Hemert's wife and a neighbor were also in the home at the time of the shooting.
