To commemorate the 200th birthday of pioneer Howard Egan, there will be a jubilee celebration the weekend of June 11-13.
Egan was born in 1815, served as an envoy for the Mormon Battalion and was a member of the vanguard company of the 1847 pioneers, according to information from the Major Howard Egan Foundation. Egan served as a deputy sheriff, worked as a Pony Express rider and superintendent and was involved in mining, ranching and cattle driving.
Events include a Pony Express Trip on June 11 starting in American Fork at 11 a.m. Participants will visit Egan's home and continue to Nevada to see Egan Canyon and the Egan Mountains.
On June 12, several educational activities are scheduled, including a Pioneer Trail Walk in the morning, a visit to relevant Egan sites in Salt Lake City in the afternoon and the Howard Egan Symposium in the evening at the Viridian Events Center, 8030 S. 1825 West, West Jordan. The symposium, which will include four speakers, is sponsored by the BYU’s Charles Redd Center for Western Studies, the Sons of Utah Pioneers and the Major Howard Egan Foundation.
On Saturday, June 13, there will be a family day at This Is the Place Heritage Park and a family party that evening.
