Former Pleasant Grove star and BYU signee Payton Henry drafted by the Brewers in the 6th round

PLEASANT GROVE — Pleasant Grove's Payton Henry was selected during round six of the Major League Baseball Draft on Friday. Henry is a 6-foot-3 catcher/pitcher prospect who was recently named as the Deseret News Mr. Baseball after his stellar prep career for the Vikings.

Henry played all four years for Pleasant Grove, batting over .500 in both his junior and senior seasons while belting 20 total home runs. He also exceled from the mound, pitching in the closer role for much of his career.

Henry signed with BYU last November and will now weigh his options whether to play for the Cougars or to sign on with the Brewer organization.

“Payton is one of the top power-hitting catchers in the country and had the opportunity to play baseball at any university he wanted. We are ecstatic he chose BYU," said BYU coach Mike Littlewood in November. "Payton will be a middle of the order type hitter for us for years to come, and an all conference type player right away. We can't wait to get Payton on campus and start coaching him next fall.”

Other accomplishments for Henry include being selected to the 2015 Louisville Slugger High School All-America team, 2015 Area Code Games, 2015 Gatorade Player of the Year and was the Provo Daily Herald’s Valley Player of the Year for baseball. As a junior, he pitched 11 innings in relief as a closer, with a 1-1 record, six saves, 13 strikeouts and a 0.61 ERA. He hit .527 for the season with nine home runs, 11 doubles and 46 RBI to help lead his team to the 5A state title. He is coached by his father, Darrin Henry, at Pleasant Grove High School. He was recruited by Arizona, Arizona State, San Diego, Utah, Utah Valley, UNLV, Nevada, Cal State Northridge and Dixie State.

Utah baseball commit Zack Trageton was also selected in the sixth round. The right-handed pitcher out of Faith Lutheran High School in Las Vegas was selected No. 180 by the Tampa Bay Rays.
