Editor's note: In anticipation of the 121st college football season in Utah, DeseretNews.com writer Jay Yeomans is ranking the 50 greatest Division I college football players of all time from the state of Utah. We're counting down the 50 days until Sept. 1 when Southern Utah at Utah and Weber State at Utah State kick off at 6 p.m. Rankings are based on what the player did during his college career.
6. Robbie Bosco, BYU, quarterback (1981-85)
Even though Bosco's name seems to always slip through the cracks when talking about great BYU players, he has the resume to be near the top list.
He was the starting quarterback on a national championship team, the WAC player of the year, won the Sammy Baugh Award, was a two-time All-American and finished third in the Heisman Trophy voting in back-to-back years.
One of his best seasons came in 1984 when he led the nation in passing yards (3,875), passing touchdowns (33) and total touchdowns (35) as the Cougars won their only national championship.
For his BYU career, he completed 64 percent of his passes for 8,400 yards and 66 touchdowns. He was inducted into the BYU Hall of Fame in 1995.
