SALT LAKE CITY—The first full-length trailer for Disney’s “The Lion King”dropped Wednesday morning, and social media users have a lot to say about it, particularly about the look of the film’s snarling feline villain.
Some have pointed out that Scar (Chiwetel Ejiofor) looks pretty different from how he looks in the original film, and not just because of his CGI animation.

For some, Scar’s “live-action” treatment is doing the original animation a disservice.
One other thing about #TheLionKing. As I said with Dumbo, taking animated characters and turning them into their "Real" versions of themselves is so unnecessary, and I think insults the animated versions and the life it can gives to them.— TRAFON (@RiseFallNick) April 10, 2019

OG Scar: evil and pompous as hell
remake Scar: a ratty looking lion I guess pic.twitter.com/5J6ygMQGGV
I'm all for the lion king remake, (mostly because of Donald Glover), but these two pictures highlight how having live action cartoon characters restricts the portrayal of emotion, I mean just look at the picture of scar in the original photo compared to the new one #TheLionKing pic.twitter.com/aFpREnNzY3— Alistair (@alip1118) April 10, 2019
The Lion King CGI looks incredible but did we really need a remake with no expression and worse line delivery pic.twitter.com/HNB93jQS03— Lee Dawson (@LeeDawsonVE) April 10, 2019
Others are asking what the deal is with his mane.
The weird thing bout Scar in Lion King 2019 is that black-maned lions ARE REAL, and they easily could have based him off of one.— AtlasOne (@TheAtlasOne) April 10, 2019
Lions with darker manes are also more aggressive and lead prides more often than lighter-maned males. Thus why Scar, the villain, has a black mane. pic.twitter.com/3t6E7eUsDw
part of me is super excited for the lion king movie bc the lion king is my fave disney movie alongside bambi but. this isn’t scar. why doesn’t he have a black mane and darker fur. if you showed this to someone they wouldn’t guess this was scar pic.twitter.com/JKJ2b3ycJA— ✨Milo✨ (@OatmeaIo) April 10, 2019
For others, the lion’s new look looks just right.
|| Scar looking like the mangy lion he is supposed to be. Can't rise to the top as a lion. So leads a pack of hyenas.— ℃aтẘoღαη (@MinxGotClaws) April 10, 2019
Mufasa. Beautiful, graceful, majestic, amazing. pic.twitter.com/X9y6Y4Xbhf
Hot take: people are excited about the new cgi lion king because they are too insecure to watch animated movies as an adult. Their loss, because the original looks so much more visually appealing.
