One foul shot for all the points? That’s the plan for the NBA G League next season.
Officials told ESPN that the NBA G League will add a new rule that will allow a single free throw shot to count for all the points. The one shot could count for one, two or three points, depending on where players are fouled on the floor.
Why?: “It marks the latest move — in both the G League and the NBA — to improve game flow and reduce the length of games,” ESPN reports.
Time: The change could shave each game by between six and eight minutes, said Brad Walker, the head of basketball operations for the G League.
However: The G League will return to the traditional free throw rules for the final two minutes of regulation and overtime, according to ESPN. “And-One” shots will proceed the same way.
Sound familiar?: The single free throw attempt idea began in the BIG3 League in 2017, according to Bleacher Report.
Tournament: Last week, the NBA G League added a new tournament for big games beginning next season, according to NBC Sports. The NBA G League Winter Showcase will happen from Dec. 19 to 22 and will include all 28 teams in the league. The winner receives a $100,000 prize. For the tournament, each team will be seeded No. 1 to No. 28. The top four seeds will receive a bye into the championship bracket. The rest of the teams will be broken into six different four-team brackets.
