Panguitch’s boys and girls track teams completed the 1A state title sweeps on Saturday at Davis High School, but not without some late-meet tension.

While Panguitch’s girls won comfortably for its eighth straight state championship, the boys had to sweat it out until the final 10 meters in the 4x400 relay finale. Panguitch had a three-point cushion in the team race heading into the final event, and it needed everyone one of those points to survive.

Water Canyon needed to finish two places ahead of Panguitch to capture its first state title in school history. And though it did beat Panguitch by finishing third, it wasn’t quite enough as Panguitch finished fourth. The final tally was Panguitch 107 and Water Canyon 105.

“I’ve been a part of five second places in my high school career. We took state in basketball this year and it’s one of the funnest memories I have. Getting another state championship is awesome,” said Panguitch’s Kyler Bennett.

Bennett finished first in the javelin, second in the discus and third in the shot put. Collectively, Panguitch’s depth in the throwing events was key critical in Panguitch re-claiming the state title after a one-year hiatus in 2019.

In the javelin, Panguitch’s Bennett, Wade Christensen and Tucker Chappell placed 1, 2 and 3. In the shot put Panguitch had four athletes place in the top eight, with Christensen. Then in the discus, Bennett finished second and Chappel third.

Collectively, those three throwing events account for 61 of Panguitch’s 107 team points.

“Getting the 1, 2, 3 in the javelin was big. We needed the extra points,” said Bennett.

Panguitch’s other top point earner was Porter Schoppe, who finished third in both the 1,600 and 3,200 meters.

Five different boys athletes won multiple events throughout the meet, Milford’s Bret Beebe (100, 200), Bryce Valley’s Miles Roberts (400, 800), Bryce Valley’s Brock Syrett (1,600, 3,200), Milford’s Blake Barnes (110 and 300 hurdles) and Water Canyon’s Hyrum Fechser (high jump and long jump).

Fecsher’s long jump of 23’08 on Friday was the best jump in the entire state this season.

On the girls side, Panguitch’s girls won easily as it racked up 181 team points. Region rival Milford finished second with 146 points.

Adelaide Englestead was one of the starts of the meet for Panguitch, as she won the 800, 1,600 and 3,200 meters, and then also finished second in the 400 meters as she stepped out of her distant comfort zone to help the team. She finished second to teammate Tabetha Henrie in the 400 meters.

“My coach is big on goals, and so I set goals for myself and it was to just give everything, give it my all and I feel like that’s what I’ve done. I feel like I’ve succeeded in my goals,” said Englestead. “I think it’s really exciting especially because a lot of our team are freshman and sophomores. We don’t have a single senior, so we have a lot ahead of us.”

Henrie also won three events for Panguitch, prevailing in the high jump and long jump to go along with her 400-meter win. Hailee Eyre was the other individual winner for the Bobcats as she won the javelin.

Rich freshman Violett Taylor had a breakout performance on the state tournament stage as she won the 100 and 200 meters and the 100 and 300 hurdles.
