A state title drought that stretches back nearly four decades is finally over for Kanab’s boys track team, while for North Summit’s girls, the title train keeps chugging along.

Kanab won back-to-back state titles in 1982 and 1983, and 38 years later the boys team finally gets to put another trophy in the display case as the Cowboys racked up 100 points at the 2A state track meet at Davis High School on Saturday to finish ahead of runner-up Monticello’s 88.5 points.

“It’s a really big deal cause we haven’t won a state title in 40 years. We’re strong in every event, we have someone in every event. It’s been very exciting.” — Kanab’s Travis Stewart

For North Summit, it pulled away from Millard late in the state meet with strong showings in the 200 meters and 4x400 relays to claim its fifth straight state championship and a staggering 11th of the past 12.

“It’s such a big deal. Our community is so supportive so whenever someone takes a state championship everyone is supportive and behind you. It feels so good,” said junior Marci Richins.

She won the 200 and 400 meters and contributed to the 4x100 relay win as the Braves totaled 124 team points. Millard was a close second with 115 points.

For Marci Richins, Savannah Richins and Hadley Richins, the state title was their third of the season as they were also key members of North Summit’s volleyball and basketball state championships this school year.

Marci Richins finished a close second in the 100 meters to Jade Crockett, just .02 behind her. They flipped positions in the 200, and Richins said she’s loved competing against a high-caliber runner like Crockett this season.

North Summit’s only other individual winner at the state meet was Elizabeth Zwahlen, as she won the 1,600 and 3,200 meters. She narrowly missed out on the distance sweep, finishing second to Millard’s Audrey Camp in a race that needed to be broken down to the thousands of a second to determine the winner.

Camp finished in 2:22.714 and Zwahlen at 2:22.718.

Camp finished third to Zwahlen in the 1,600 and fifth in the 3,200 meters, and said she knew she had to stick with her the entire 800 meters to have a chance, believing she was faster if it came down to a sprint.

Camp was emotionally talking about the joy of winning her final high school race. She’ll be running in college at Southern Idaho.

“I really, really wanted to win, so I was like I’m just going to go out and if I die, I die, I’m trying to give it my all so I can hopefully have a chance to win,” said Camp.

For runner-up Millard, its only other individual state champ was Mary Degraffenreid in the javelin.

For Kanab’s boys, the sprinting of Travis Stewart and the throwing of Brandon Stein and Collin Szymanski were keys to the championship.

Stewart, just a sophomore, won the 100 meters (11.40), 200 meters (22.45) and 400 meters (51.17) with strong times in each.

“It’s a really big deal cause we haven’t won a state title in 40 years,” said Stewart. “We’re strong in every event, we have someone in every event. It’s been very exciting.”

Stein won the shot put and finished second in the discus, while Szymanski finishing first in the discus.

Nathan Bowman was clutch as well for Kanab at the state meet, finishing third in the 3,200 meters and fourth in both the 800 and 1,600. He accounted for 16 teams points, which Kanab needed all of to beat Monticello.

Two of 2A’s top senior athletes wrapped up their careers in impressive fashion. Monticello’s Cedar English won the high jump and long jump and finished fourth in the javelin, while Rowland Hall’s Carson Burian won the 1,600 and 3,200 meters and then anchored his team’s sprint medley relay victory.
