Bloody feet? No problem. Carter Payne was ready.

Exhausted from just competing in the high jump? No problem. Jarron Savage was in, too.

The two were members of Morgan’s 4x400 meter relay team that needed to beat Juab in the final event to claim the 3A team state championship.

Juab led by half a point heading into the finale of the state meet at Davis High School, and Morgan’s coach huddled up the potential contributors for the relay and asked “who was in?”

With a chance to win a state title, everyone said yes.

The Trojans didn’t end up winning the race, but the team of Payne, Brogan Garrett, Jimmy Savage and Jarron Savage finished second, nearly two seconds head of Juab, and that was enough for Morgan to finish ahead of Juab in the team standings, 105.5 to 104.

“We just came out and performed, we just knew we had it. It was just a mindset we had it. I’m just proud of the boys and proud of everybody that worked so hard to get here and how we came together as a team,” said Jarron Savage, who ran the anchor leg after little brother Jimmy Savage gave him a big lead with a strong third leg.

The championship was a repeat for Morgan, which ended a 23-year state title drought with its 2019 title.

Ironically enough, Delta’s girls won its second straight state championship. It’s only other title in school history also occurred back in 1996, the same year as Morgan’s only other title in school history.

Unlike Morgan, Delta’s title was realistically in the bag when Delta’s bus pulled into the parking lot for Day 1 of the state meet on Friday.

Delta dominated the state meet racking up 164 points, more than doubling up second-place Morgan and third-place Juab.

It finished first in eight of 16 events, with Savannah Nielson winning four events (100 and 300 hurdles, 100 meters and 4x100 relay) and Adi Nielson winning three (200 and 400 meters and 4x400 relay).

“Our goal this year, and we talk about all the time, is finishing right and not letting down our laurels. I think just staying humble and going out and executing,” said Adi Nielson, whose only second-place finish came in the 300 hurdles as she finished .06 seconds behind cousin Savannah Nielson.

For Savannah Nielson, she’s loved being part of such a dominant team that’s pushed her to get better each week.

“It’s awesome to come from a small town like this and have everybody doing so good,” she said. “Having people on our team to push you, that’s where a lot of my strengths come from, cause I wouldn’t be where I am without people pushing me.”

Delta’s other individual winner was Saylor Day, who won the shot put and finished second in the javelin.

Grand’s Kylah Ricks was a double winner in the 1,600 and 3,200 meters, but finished second to Oakley Olson in the 800 meters. Olson finished second to Ricks in the other two distance races, so the 800 win was a nice meet ender for the senior.

For Morgan’s boys, its depth was the key as it won just one individual event, the 4x100 relay.

Jarron Savage’s runner-up finish in the high jump, however, along with Robby Cameron’s top three finishes in the 100, 200 and 400 meters helped the Trojans methodically collect points throughout the meet.

Runner-up Juab had two individual winners, with Daylen Christensen winning the discus and Bodee Blackett the javelin.

Emery senior Treven Brazier was the standout of the meet as he won the 100 meters, the 110 and 300 hurdles and then finished second in the 200 meters to Summit Academy’s Titan Kilgore.

The only other double winner in 3A was Richfield’s Richard Crane, who won the 800 and 1,600 meters.
