Two Region 9 teams won 4A state track titles on Saturday, which really isn’t surprising as it seems to happen every year. Who actually lifted the girls trophy, however, was a big surprise.
While Desert Hills’ boys were busy putting the finishing touches on an eighth straight state championship, Snow Canyon’s girls surprised many by winning its first state title in school history.
Led by Kristin Cook who finished with four gold medals, the Warriors scored 90 team points to top second-place Desert Hills, which finished with 77.5 points.
Considering that Snow Canyon finished fourth in Region 9, a whopping 57 points behind Desert Hills, flipping that narrative and winning the state title was a huge accomplishment.
“We knew it was going to be close, but things worked out,” said Cook. “I think we had a good chance coming in just because a lot of the points Desert Hills scored in region were filler points which here at state those filler points are filled by other schools and other teams at state. I think we had a really good chance.”
Cook finished with a first-place finish in the 100 and 200 meters and then also ran a leg in Snow Canyon’s 4x100 and 4x200 winning relay teams. Those 40 team points were instrumental in the Warriors earning girls track hardware for the first time in school history.
The team race between Snow Canyon and Desert Hills was tight until the 200 meters. With Cook finishing first and teammate Emma Bingham third, the Warriors went ahead more than 10 points which made the final 4x400 relay inconsequential in the team race. It was a good thing, too, because Desert Hills finished second and Snow Canyon finished outside the top eight.
Cook had the fastest 100-meter time in the state prior to the state meet at 11.90, but she ran a safe race in the 100-meter final — her first race of the day — to be fresh for her other three races on Saturday.
“I didn’t have a very good start, but my mindset going in was just to compete, get first and save my legs for the 4x100 relay, that was big focus is that relay,” said Cook.
Bingham, Hailee Phillips, Darcy Jackson and Brea Bulkley also came up huge for the Warriors, each earning at least one top five finish to secure valuable team points.
The 4A girls meet featured some outstanding performances from several multi-event winners.
Hurricane’s Caila Odekirk won the 1,600 and 3,200 meters and was a runner-up in the 800. Pine View’s Alli Baker won the 400 and 800 meters and was a runner-up in the 1,600.

Mountain Crest’s Alisabeth Apedaile won both the 100 and 300 hurdles.
Logan had a pair of multi-event winners as Milly Garren won the shot put and discus, and then Amber Kartchner won the long jump and tied for first in the high jump with Uintah’s Kora Cook by clearing 5’04.
For Desert Hills boys, its depth in a variety of events was the difference in the state title, as it narrowly beat region rival Pine View 98.5 to 95.5.
Leading the way for Desert Hills was Peyton Williams, who won both the shot put and discus by wide margins.
“My sister won a championship and then my brother-in-law won one, it’s cool to be able to win one for myself,” said Williams, whose discus throw of 175’11 was the best in the state this year.
The way the shot put pit was situated for the state meet at Davis High School, spectators surrounded most of the pit as it was also a great vantage point to watch the high jump. Williams said it made for a very fun atmosphere.
“I’ve never seen that many people for shot put there and cheering. It was cool. All of Region 9 and all those people were there cheering for everybody no matter what team,” said Williams.
Carson Helmer won the 3,200 meters for Desert Hills’ only other individual finish. However, teammates Hunter Stucki, Tyson Parker, Brighton Bingham, Joshua Crandall, Jake Buckway, Hunter Bentley and Caleb Bentley all stood on the podium at least once on Friday and Saturday to secure valuable team points for the Thunder.
Pine View’s runner-up finish was highlighted by an outstanding meet from twin brothers Dominique and Marcus McKenzie.
Dominique McKenzie won the 100 meters (10.69), 200 meters (21.06) and 400 meters (48.75) with outstanding times despite windy conditions. His brother Marcus McKenzie finished second in all three races, with the two also finishing second and fifth in the long jump.
Collectively they accounted for 66 of Pine View’s 95.5 team points.
Snow Canyon’s Bo Hickman had arguably the best performance of the entire meet on Saturday as he threw the javelin 204’09. Since the javelin competition changed in 2000, Hickman is only the fourth Utah athlete to ever throw the javelin over 200 feet, as his 204’09 is the third-best mark in state history.
Other standouts included Hurricane’s Josh Armstrong winning the 800 and 1,600 meters, Hurricane’s Kenneth Moore winning the 110 hurdles and Dixie’s Spencer Carlile winning the 300 hurdles. The two Region 9 hurdles have gone back and forth all season in the two events, and Carlile’s time of 37.67 in the 300 was a new PR and the best time in Utah this year.
“At the beginning there was a head wind and we kind of all felt that headwind and then right when we hit that corner we just turned it on,” said Carlile, who’s committed to BYU.
