Ewan McGregor confirmed in a recent interview that the Obi-Wan Kenobi TV series — which will be released on Disney Plus at some time in the future — was originally meant to be a movie.

“It wasn’t always going to be a series, not initially,” McGregor told ComingSoon. “When we first started talking about (it) , that wasn’t really in the cards, but everything’s changed so much, so quickly. It’s really exciting that it is now. I’m really into the idea to be able to tell the story over several hours instead of just one hit. I think it’s going to be quite cool.”

McGregor’s confirmation comes after rumors suggested for years that Lucasfilm and Disney planned to release an Obi-Wan Kenobi spin-off film.

Rumors began back during the launch of “Solo: A Star Wars Story” as Lucasfilm looked to produce one-off films about major characters. But “Solo” didn’t reach box office expectations, which led Lucasfilm to reportedly cancel a slew of projects.

More reports suggested a Kenobi project was in the works but nothing surfaced until earlier this year at the D23 Expo, as reported by the Deseret News.

McGregor told ComicBook.com he is expected to return to the role and become more like Alec Guinness, who played the character in “A New Hope.”

“The most exciting thing before was trying to play a younger Alec Guinness,” McGregor told ComicBook.com. “To study Alec Guinness’ work and his performance in Star Wars and then try and feel like I was the younger version of him. That and the sword fights were pretty good fun to learn, as well. This time, I’m just going to be that much closer to him in age and it will be interesting to do that. The story takes place, you know when the story takes place. So, it’s quite interesting.”
