It has now been over a year since Mat and Savanna Shaw went viral, and the daddy-daughter duo shows no signs of slowing down.
In fact, the Shaws just finished recording their third album in less than a year. The album won’t come out until May, but they recently shared a special performance of a song from the upcoming record with their fans.
On March 28 — the first day of Holy Week — the Shaws released their rendition of “Amazing Grace.” The music video features a gospel choir, singers Aitana Alapa and Mark Vaki — who are also based in Utah — and the Shaws’ arranger, Stephen Nelson, on piano.
“The song’s simple message is one of gratitude; gratitude for everything His amazing grace enables us to do and be and become,” the Shaws wrote on Facebook. “The song will invariably mean something different for everyone because we all have a unique and individual relationship with our Maker. What is beautiful about this song is the space it gives for all of us to contemplate on just how amazing His grace is in each of our lives.”
In three days, the song has been viewed more than 100,000 times on YouTube.
The Shaws recently told the Deseret News that while going viral at the start of the pandemic was unexpected and has made their lives busier than they could’ve ever imagined, they are also grateful because it has given them a platform to spread messages of hope around the world.
“Moments when you get to communicate through music in a way that you can’t through words, I think that’s the best part,” Savanna Shaw, 16, told the Deseret News. “I didn’t have that opportunity before we went viral.”
This year, as the COVID-19 vaccine rollout continues and restrictions begin to lift, the Shaws said they plan to do more in-person performances and concerts — and maybe even a tour in the next couple of years.
“We’ve made an effort to have our songs be inspiring and uplifting and wholesome, and so to use that music to go out and touch people and connect with people will just be amazing,” Mat Shaw recently told the Deseret News. “The few opportunities that we’ve had have been so special. That’s the magic with live music, is that it really has a way of touching the soul that not really much else can. It just pierces our souls and breaks down our walls and defenses. We really look forward to performing this next year.”
