About the Montpelier Idaho Temple

The Montpelier Idaho Temple was first announced in April 2022 by late church President Russell M. Nelson.

Construction of the temple began in June 2023 following a groundbreaking ceremony to dedicate the temple’s 2.6-acre site.

The newly built Montpelier temple is a two-story structure of approximately 27,000 square feet. It is located in southwest Montpelier, a small city in southeastern Idaho.

“The chicory flower motif, inspired by a flower common in the Montpelier area, appears in various stages of bloom throughout the temple’s interior,” states a recent church press release.

Other local wildflowers and the “turquoise waters” of nearby Bear Lake are also reflected in the temple’s color palette of gold, blue, green and yellow.

Multiple pieces of original artwork are also featured inside the temple. These pieces include “North Fork Trail, Wind Rivers Wyoming” by Kimbal Warren, “He Lives” by Chris Manwaring, “River Tranquility” by John Horejs and “Softly Now the Light of Day” by Josh Clare.

Idaho currently has 11 announced or operating temples. Not including the Montpelier temple, seven are in operation, two are under construction, and one is in planning and design stages.

The Montpelier Idaho Temple will become the eighth operating temple in Idaho once dedicated and will help serve the state’s nearly 483,000 Latter-day Saints.
