A day after the Canadian Olympic Committee announced that it would not be sending teams to the 2020 Summer Games in Tokyo if they proceed as planned, USA Today’s Christine Brennan reported Monday that the International Olympic Committee is planning on postponing them, likely until 2021.
“On the basis of the information the IOC has, postponement has been decided,” IOC member Dick Pound is quoted as saying. “The parameters going forward have not been determined, but the Games are not going to start on July 24, that much I know.”
IOC president Thomas Bach had announced Sunday that the committee would decide its plan in the next four weeks, which prompted the COC’s decision.
USA Today reported that Australia, Germany, Brazil and Norway were also considering not participating in the Games should they proceed as planned.
