Authorities have decided to postpone Wednesday night’s Sugar Bowl in New Orleans as the city continues to grapple with a truck attack that left at least 10 people dead.
The Sugar Bowl, part of the quarterfinal round of the College Football Playoff, had been set for Wednesday night at 6:45 p.m. MST.
Now, the game between Georgia and Notre Dame is scheduled for Thursday at 2 p.m. MST, per ESPN’s Pete Thamel.
New Orleans attack
The truck crash in New Orleans is being investigated as an act of terrorism, as the Deseret News previously reported.
Ten people were killed and dozens more injured after a man drove into a crowd of New Year’s revelers around 3:15 a.m. local time on Wednesday.
Authorities later discovered an “improvised bomb” near the man’s truck, per The New York Times.
“This morning, an individual drove a car into a crowd of people on Bourbon Street in New Orleans, killing a number of people and injuring dozens of others. The subject then engaged with local law enforcement and is now deceased. The FBI is the lead investigative agency, and we are working with our partners to investigate this as an act of terrorism,” the FBI said in a statement released Wednesday morning.
The attack took place at the intersection of Canal and Bourbon streets in New Orleans, about two blocks away from where the Georgia football team is staying, according to The Washington Post.
University of Georgia president Jere W. Morehead said in a statement that a Georgia student was among the people injured during the truck crash.
“At this point, we have learned that a University of Georgia student was critically injured in the attack and is receiving medical treatment. I have spoken to the student’s family and shared my concern, support and well wishes on behalf of the entire UGA community,” Morehead said.
Sugar Bowl time
In a Wednesday interview with ABC News, ESPN’s Laura Rutledge, who is on the ground in New Orleans, said that the Georgia football team is sheltering in place at their hotel.
Meanwhile, police were going through Caesars Superdome with dogs that are trained to detect explosives, Rutledge said.
“The Sugar Bowl Committee is devastated by the terrible events from early this morning. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families,” Sugar Bowl organizers said in a statement.
The upcoming Super Bowl is set to be played in New Orleans at the Superdome, as well.
