Real Salt Lake headed southeast to face FC Dallas on Saturday, putting on a display of persistence despite a challenging start at Toyota Stadium. After Dallas drew first — and second — blood early in the first half, RSL fought to level the score, but their offensive threats weren’t quite enough to overcome the early deficit.
Luna’s late spark not enough to overcome early Dallas double
Real Salt Lake’s relentless pressure was met with a clinical counterpunch as FC Dallas struck twice in six minutes to take an early lead. Dallas attacker Santiago Moreno opened the scoring in the 18th minute with a strike from outside the box to the left corner of the net, before Kaick Ferreira doubled the home side’s lead in the 24th minute. RSL threatened to respond later in the half, highlighted by a strong effort from Noel Caliskan, who’s shot curled towards the right corner from outside the box, but was tipped away by FC Dallas goalkeeper Michael Collodi.
RSL found a late breakthrough in the 84th minute when U.S. World Cup hopeful Diego Luna finished off an assist from Designated Player Morgan Guilavogui to cut the Dallas lead down 2-1. Just a few moments later, FC Dallas answered as Samuel Sarver won a foot race into the box and finished past a diving Rafael Cabral to seal the result in the closing minutes, giving the Texas team the home victory.
Quotable:
“Losing games are gonna happen. The most important thing about losing games is that we don’t lose any game in the vein. That as a group, we commit to our structure,” said RSL Head coach Pablo Mastroeni. “When you have structure, that’s where creativity spawns from, because you know where players are going to be.”
Game summary
FC Dallas seized early control at Toyota Stadium, netting two goals within six minutes through Moreno and Kaick. Despite the early deficit, Real Salt Lake dominated long stretches of play, forcing Michael Collodi into several difficult saves and earning a staggering number of corner kicks that kept the Dallas defense under constant duress. RSL’s persistence nearly paid off before the break, but a sequence of blocked headers from Sergi Solans and Juan Manuel Sanabria epitomized a frustrating opening 45 minutes where the Utah team couldn’t find retaliation.
The second half became a tactical battle defined by heavy squad rotation, as RSL introduced Victor Olatunji and Alexandros Katranis to spark the offense. RSL’s persistence finally paid off in the 85th minute when Luna blasted the ball to the back of the net, setting up a final push for the equalizer. As RSL threw numbers forward in a courageous bid to level the score, Dallas managed to exploit a late counter-attack in stoppage time to add a third goal.
