WOODS CROSS — HollyFrontier became the latest refinery in Utah to produce Tier 3 gasoline, which in newer model cars reduces emissions by as much as 80% and in older vehicles by 12%.

The move to the cleaner burning fuel was celebrated Friday by Utah Gov. Gary Herbert, House Speaker Brad Wilson, R-Kaysville, Senate President Stuart Adams, R-Layton, company executives and the Utah Petroleum Association.

HollyFrontier announced in April its plan to produce the fuel, joining Marathon, Silver Eagle and Chevron refineries.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, which administers the Clean Air Act, has said that the Wasatch Front is the place in the country that would benefit the most from using Tier 3 fuel in vehicles, which account for about 50% of emissions polluting the atmosphere.

The 80% reduction in tailpipe emissions by using Tier 3 fuel is the equivalent of taking four out of five vehicles off the road.

In 2019, Marathon Petroleum celebrated its conversion to Tier 3 fuel and Silver Eagle has been producing it for years.

Motorists can go to tier3gas.org to find a gas station near them that sells the Tier 3 fuel.
