Jose Alfredo Perez San Roman, the commander of the 1961 Bay of Pigs invasion of Cuba, was found dead at his home Sunday, an apparent suicide at age 58.

San Roman led the 1,500-man brigade of Cuban exiles in the abortive assault on their island homeland in April 1961. Defeated by Cuban troops, more than 1,000 of them were imprisoned nearly two years.The invasion cost almost 100 lives, and the more than 1,000 prisoners were held until December 1962 when they were freed in exchange for food and medicine.
