Kennecott and federal Mine Safety and Health Administration inspectors Saturday continued their investigation of a crane equipment failure that resulted in the death of a maintenance worker Friday afternoon.
Brent A. Smith, 41, Sandy, was killed at about 2 p.m., when the safety cage in which he was working separated from a boom crane and fell 25 feet to the ground.A Kennecott spokesman said the accident occurred while Smith was repairing a giant ore shovel from the top of the crane inside the open pit mine.
