The nation's first municipal college, the City College of New York, celebrates its 150th anniversary with the issuance of a new 20-cent postal card. It is the latest addition to the U.S. Postal Service's "Historic Preservation Series."
CCNY, originally known as the Free Academy, has one of the most diverse student bodies of any college in America and has produced eight graduates who have won a Nobel Prize.Derry Noyes of Washington, D.C., designed the stamp, which was illustrated by Howard Koslow of Toms River, N.J.
The card features Shepard Hall, a CCNY landmark. At the top left is "20 USA." At the bottom is the inscription "The City College of New York. CCNY. 150th Anniversary."
The CCNY postcard was formally dedicated in the Marion Anderson Theater of the Aaron Davis Hall on campus.
First day of issue postmarks are available by mail. You may purchase the new postcard at your local post office. Address the cards and place them in a larger envelope addressed to: City College of New York Postal Card, Postmaster, Morgan PDC, 341 9th Ave., Room 1037, New York, NY 10199-9991.
All orders must be postmarked by June 6.
The Philatelic Fulfillment Service Center also offers first-day covers for each new stamp issue (including the CCNY card) postmarked with the official first day of issue cancellation. First-day covers remain on sale at the center for at least one year after issuance.
