India just set the record for the most COVID-19 infections in a single day with 312,731 new cases in one day, according to The New York Times.

India sets COVID-19 record

India’s number surpasses the previous record, which was 300,669 coronavirus cases in a single day in the United States on Jan. 8, The New York Times reports.

Of course, each country in the world has different levels of access to testing and different testing methods, which could lead to a problem in the data. Per The New York Times, “Differences in testing levels from country to country, and a widespread lack of tests early in the pandemic, make comparisons difficult.”

India has seen a major outbreak of COVID-19 cases in recent weeks. According to BBC News, India is in the middle of a second wave, which has hurt the country’s health care system. There have been oxygen shortages and crowds gathering outside of hospitals.

In March, India’s government announced the country had discovered a double-mutant of the novel coronavirus, which might have the power to evade vaccines, as I wrote for the Deseret News.

The mutation is a combination of the L452R mutation discovered in California and the E484Q mutation discovered throughout the world, as I explained for the Deseret News.
