Darth Maul might have been the original villain in the “Star Wars” sequel trilogy if George Lucas had followed through with his original idea.

What’s going on?

A Reddit user recently posted a photo from an older “Star Wars” book “Star Wars Archives Episode 1-3 The Prequels.”

The book includes a passage where Lucas — the creator of “Star Wars” — explains how Darth Maul would influence the sequel trilogy.

  • “Maul eventually becomes the godfather of crime in the universe because as the Empire fails, he takes over.”

The sequel trilogy would have focused on Leia trying to bring down Maul and his crime syndicate. Leia would have worked to take down a criminal group, rather than falling into another galactic war.

The author of the book, Paul Duncan, even confirmed these rumors in a social media post:

What else would have happened?

The passage from the book reveals some more details about this version of Lucas’ sequel trilogy:

  • Stormtroopers would have overtaken some planets in the post-”Return of the Jedi” galaxy.
  • Luke Skywalker is trying to restart the Jedi Order.
  • Luke would have rebuilt the Jedi Order and renewed the New Republic.
  • Leia would have become Supreme Chancellor. And she would have ended up as the Chosen One.
