“Star Wars: The Mandalorian” will likely begin production this spring, setting us on a path to return to a galaxy far, far away.

What’s going on?

A new listing on ProductionList.com — which keeps track of production start dates for films, TV shows and more — has “The Mandalorian” beginning production in April.

  • The listing suggests that “The Mandalorian” will begin filming on April 5, 2021, in Los Angeles.
  • “The Mandalorian is set after the fall of the Empire and before the emergence of the First Order. We follow the travails of a lone gunfighter in the outer reaches of the galaxy far from the authority of the New Republic,” the listing reads.

When does season 3 drop?

It’s unclear. But it won’t be in 2021. “The Book of Boba Fett” will hit Disney+ during fall 2021 season, as I wrote about for the Deseret News, which will push back the start of “The Mandalorian,” Season 3.

‘The Mandalorian’ will jump timelines in Season 3, Pedro Pascal says

“Mandalorian” and “Book of Boba Fett” showrunner Jon Favreau clarified the difference in an interview with “Good Morning America.”

“So this is actually separate from ‘The Mandalorian Season 3. But what we didn’t say in that announcement is the next show coming up — what Kathy called ‘the next chapter’ — is going to be ‘The Book of Boba Fett,’ and then we go into production right after that on ‘The Mandalorian,’ back with the main character that we all know and love ... pretty soon following that. There’s a lot of ‘Star Wars’ content coming out, I think they announced 10 projects, I think this will be 11.”

What we know about Season 3

Early development and production — likely writing and storyboarding — began in April 2020, right before the coronavirus pandemic started, as I wrote for the Deseret News.

  • Unnamed sources told Variety that Favreau had been “writing Season 3 for a while” with a direction in mind.

Pedro Pascal, who plays the Mandalorian on the “Star Wars” Disney+ show, recently confirmed in an interview with IndieWire that the show will jump timelines for the third season.

“I am told what’s happening and what the plan is, but I can’t share it,” Pascal said. “They are in the expansion of this world, where there are so many unexpected surprises and timelines that are going to be dealt with.”

Pascal hinted that “The Mandalorian” Season 3 might crossover with other “Star Wars” projects.

“If the character were to cross over into these worlds, it will be utilized in a way that isn’t meant to be expected. I wouldn’t want to spoil the surprise of whether or not characters from the show we already know are crossing over.”
