A teaser trailer for the long-awaited “Superman” film has finally dropped, and it shows the Man of Steel as we rarely see him: battered and bloody.

The latest iteration of “Superman,” coming out July 11 of next year, is the first film solely focused on the superhero since 2013, when Henry Cavill took the helm in “Man of Steel.”

This time, David Corenswet plays the titular superhero, alongside Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Nicholas Holt as Lex Luthor and Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, A.K.A. Green Latern.

Director James Gunn, who directed the “Guardians of the Galaxy” trilogy, said that showing Superman as battered and bruised was an intentional choice.

During a trailer launch event on Monday, Gunn said, according to Variety, “We do have sort of a battered vision of Superman at the beginning, and I think that is our country.”

He continued, “I believe in the goodness of human beings, and I believe that most people in this country, despite their ideological beliefs or their politics, are doing their best to get by and trying to be good people, despite what it may seem like for the other side, no matter what that other side might be.”

Gunn continued to say that “Superman” is about the “basic kindness of human beings.”

‘Superman’ teaser reveals Krypto, Green Lantern and more

The new “Superman” teaser trailer also shows a character that hasn’t gotten much love in DC movies: Krypto, Superman’s trusty dog.

As the Deseret News previously reported, Gunn’s own rescue dog, Oz, inspired him to include Krypto in the movie.

“He’s not nearly the best dog,” Gunn said about Krypto during Monday’s trailer launch, according to The Hollywood Reporter. “There’s a lot more to Krypto than you see in this trailer.”

We also see a few other superheroes that will be featured in the film: Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi as Mr. Terrific and Fillion as Green Lantern.

And there’s Hoult as Lex Luthor, who will be portrayed as a villain audiences might be able to relate to.

“Obviously, he’s smart and ruthless, and he has to outmaneuver Superman on certain levels, because he can’t match him in others,” Hoult said, according to Variety.

“But there’s also something about this character, hopefully, from my standpoint, where even though you perhaps don’t agree with his process, you can understand where he’s coming from and why what he’s pushing as his ideology is perhaps better for humanity,” he continued.

The “Superman” movie in 2025 is just the beginning of an effort to launch the new DC Universe, according to Variety.

Alongside his co-chief Peter Safran, Gunn will “have an entire universe of TV and films planned after Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav hired them with the mandate to re-invent DC,” according to The Hollywood Reporter.

When the news was announced in 2022, The Hollywood Reporter called it an “unprecedented move.”

“Gunn will focus on the creative side of things, while Safran will focus on the business and production side,” the article said. “Both are expected to continue to direct and produce projects, respectively.”
