Joan Kennedy, former wife of U.S. Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, has been scheduled to stand trial in Barnstable, Mass., Sept. 13 on a drunken driving charge.

The trial date was set Thursday after a telephone conference between her attorney, Patrick Butler of Hyannis, and Assistant Barnstable County District Attorney Richard Piazza.Mrs. Kennedy, 51, has pleaded innocent.

She was arrested and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol July 5 in Craigville on Cape Cod after the car she was driving hit a fence, police said. She escaped injury.
