The San Francisco 49ers on Friday signed wide receiver Mike Sherrard, the Dallas Cowboys' 1986 first-round draft pick whose twice-broken right leg has kept him out of action since his rookie season.

Sherrard, who had been placed on the Cowboys' unrestricted free-agent list, probably will not play this season while he continues rehabilitation. But 49ers vice president John McVay said team physicians have told the team that Sherrard probably will return to full speed after his leg is healed.
