Taurean Blacque, former "Hill Street Blues"tar who was recently named as President Bush's national spokesman on adoption, will visit the University of Utah as part of Black Awareness Month.
He will speak Wednesday, Feb. 21, at 3 p.m. in the Alumni House on "Focus on Black Adoptions." Blacque, an adoptive father of nine, portrayed detective Neal Washington in the popular TV series.Other lectures and events scheduled for Black Awareness Month include:
-"Women in the Civil Rights Movement," by Roseann Pope-Bell on Wednesday, Feb. 7, at 4 p.m. in the Social and Behavioral Science Auditorium.
-"Black Women: An Agenda for the 1990s," by Pope-Bell, Friday, Feb. 9, at 7 p.m. at Calvary Baptist Church, 232 E. 700 South.
-Poet George Barlow will discuss African-American poetry at 9:55 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 12, in Orson Spencer Hall, room 206.
-Poetry reading by Barlow on Monday, Feb. 12, at noon in the Marriott Library Auditorium.
-"Writing Black Women Back Into History," by Doris Fields on Tuesday, Feb. 13, in the Women's Resource Center, 290 Olpin Union.
-Spike Lee's movie, "Do the Right Thing," will be shown at a Black Student Union reception on Sunday, Feb. 25, at 1:30 p.m. in the Carlson Hall Lounge.
-A modern dance concert celebrating black dance and featuring Thomas Warfield at 5 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 25, in the Alice Sheets Marriott Center for Dance, studio 7.
