Parker in 1st at world archery meet
ANTALYA, Turkey - Utah's Denise Parker moved into the elimination round of the World Championships in first place over a field of the world's top female archers.
Parker shot a FITA score of 1,361 in two days of competition. Second was Natalia Valeeva of Russia, with a score of 1,353, and third was Cho Youn-Jeong of Korean, the gold medalist in the 1992 Olympics, with a score of 1,343. Valeeva eliminated Parker in the semifinal round of the Olympics last year.
This is Parker's highest score in FITA competition. Her previous high was a 1,348 shot in 1990.
Going into the finals today, the top 32 archers met in head-to-head competition. Each archer was to shoot 12 arrows each round. Low scorer was eliminated, while high scorer advanced.
The last time the World Championships were held was in 1991 in Poland. Parker finished 5th. She also finished 5th in the Olympics in 1992.
In archery, a score of 1,300 or higher is considered world class. The fact that 24 women advanced into the finals with a score of 1,300 or higher is an indication of the strong field at this event.
The world record for a FITA shoot is 1,375 and is held by a Korean shooter.
